I have never met Tom Davis, but I've always felt a personal connection to his writings and was very excited to receive this book for Christmas. Tom and I are both northwest Iowa natives who share a love for setters and chasing birds. The connection runs a little deeper in that my Maggie dog is a littermate to Tom's Ernie, and both are grandpups to Tom's beloved Emmylou dog. So, it was with great anticipation that I read the book.
The book is a collection of Mr. Davis's writings, many that I had not previously read. Tom truly has a gift with words and can artfully craft a story. After reading many of them, you are not only given a good hunting story but also something deeper, something more to be pondered. It is very evident that this author has more than a superficial love for hunting and the dogs we use to pursue these birds. In my opinion this book should rank as a modern day classic.
If you enjoy Tom’s contributions to the many great outdoor publications for which he writes, you will thoroughly enjoy this collection, and if you're unfamiliar with Mr. Davis's writings, I can think of no better way to become introduced. This is a well-written, enjoyable read to help pass the time between the seasons.
