I’m almost ashamed to say that the first time I picked up this book I didn’t get very far into it before putting it back on the shelf. I have no recollection of what may have been going on at the time. All I can think of is that I was not in the right frame of mind, because ironically after finishing this book I would count it among one of the best hunting/philosophical books I’ve read in a while. I was actually surprised to see in my reading list that I previously had not completed it.
If you are looking for a whack them and stack them book, this one is not for you. Sydney Lea is a poet and author who brings forth many interesting thoughts and ideas, not just about hunting but also about our outdoor ethic, life and the land we live in. To say some of his political “suggestions” in the book are in line with my own feelings may offend some, but so be it. I’m not saying the entire book was full of me exclaiming “exactly,” but it was indeed a nice change of pace.
Lea is clearly an intelligent and thoughtful individual, and I would strongly recommend the book to anyone looking for something just a little different from the typical hunting genre of books. I enjoyed it to such a degree that I look forward to purchasing Mr. Lea’s other works, and I hardly consider myself a fancier of poetry.
