The Deutsch Kurzhaar is another product of nineteenth century Germany. As the dog intended for the "common man" the Deutsch Kurzhaar is a versatile hunting dog with natural pointing, tracking and retrieving instincts. The Kurzhaar is descended from the Spanish Pointer, certain German tracking hounds, the English Foxhound, and eventually the English Pointer. The main difference between the Kurzhaar and the German Shorthair has to do with registry and testing criteria.
The Kurzhaar is an intelligent and affectionate family dog and a tireless companion in the field. They usually measure between 21 and 25 inches and traditionally weigh between 45 to 70 pounds. They are a sturdy dog, lean and muscular. Traditional colors include solid liver, or a combination of liver and white or roan. Their coat is short, thick and hard to the touch, making it an excellent insulator for water and cold.
