German Shorthair

German Shorthair on pointThe German Shorthair Pointer is a versatile, all-purpose hunting dog. It is very similar in many respects to the Deutsch Kurzhaar, its European counterpart. In the field, the Shorthair demonstrates natural pointing, tracking and retrieving abilities and boundless energy.

My personal note on the breed, while there are many great representatives it is a breed with some sharp individuals as well as some hyper individuals. As with all dogs thorough research should be conducted on the lines you are considering.

The German Shorthair usually measures between 21 and 25 inches and traditionally weighs between 45 to 70 pounds. They are a sturdy dog, lean and muscular. Traditional colors include solid liver, or a combination of liver and white or roan. Their coat is short, thick and hard to the touch, making it an excellent insulator for water and cold.

In this country there is somewhat of a split in the field dogs. Some prefer very small, agile dogs that can cover ground in a manner more fitting to a pointer; while others prefer a much bigger dog that is a more methodical hunter.
