The Boykin Spaniel is a versatile dog with retrieving and flushing abilities. This medium breed is typically very energetic and enthusiastic in the field. A strong swimmer, the Boykin is used for water retrieving as well as field retrieving and upland game flushing. Another breed that traces its history in America the Boykin was developed in South Carolina after the turn of the 20th century.
The Boykin is a medium sized, sturdy typical spaniel. It is a friendly dog that is eager to please. Boykin's range is size from 14-18 inches at the shoulder and from 25-40 pounds with females typically being at the lower end of the ranges and male at the upper. The coat is flat or with a moderate curl and of a deep brown or chocolate color.
One very large caveat with this breed is its health. While many responsible breeders are doing there best to identify and eliminate health problems with the dogs' small genetic pool a few genetic "disasters" have cropped up. It is extremely important to look into the health of this breed. Also, there is currently a split within the breed's fans with some favoring AKC recognition and others that do not. You will find links to both groups below.
