American Water Spaniel

Just like the Chesapeake Bay Retriever, the American Water Spaniel was developed in Wisconsin as a cold water duck dog and has been used as a retriever, flusher and personal family companion.  The AWS is the Midwest's contribution to a versatile hunting spaniel and still has some regional popularity.

As one of the smaller hunting breeds, the AWS measures only 15-18 inches in height and weighs between 25 and 45 pounds. However, this breed's small size should not be mistaken for timidity in the field. The AWS is known as a bundle of raw energy with superior mental alertness and intelligence. They are usually some variation of brown and have a curly coat designed to protect against the elements.
