Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever

If the Curly Coat Retriever has the must unique appearance for the retrievers, the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever takes the cake for uniqueness in job description. The breed was developed in Nova Scotia to toll (or lure) waterfowl into range and then to retrieve the birds upon success. The tolling is accomplished by having the dog running, jumping and playing along the shoreline, usually in response to the hunter throwing something for the dog to chase. The dog's actions and the red coloring arouse the curiosity of the rafted ducks enough that they swim within gun range.

The Toller is a medium-sized dog that is well muscled, alert and agile. A dog with a beautiful double coat of medium length that is colored in various shades of red with white markings accepted at the tip of the tail on the feet and/or chest.

It is a gentle and intelligent breed that is outgoing once it is in the field ready to perform. This another breed that should be brought along at its own pace once training is commenced. The Toller has not shared the popularity of some of the other retriever breeds and as a result has not shown as many of the genetic problems seen in those breeds. As with any dog purchase, though, research is essential.
