Spinone Italiano

The Spinone Italiano is also known as the Italian Pointer. This ancient breed is a slow and sure-footed "old fashioned" pointing dog similar to those used before the era of wing shooting.

The Spinone is a solidly-built dog with a robust frame suitable for long days in the field. They traditionally measure between 22 and 27 inches tall. One of the key features of this breed is its coat, which must measure between 1-1/2 and 2-1/2 inches in length on its body with shorter hair on its ears, muzzle and legs. The coat is dense, stiff and at times slightly curly, which protects it in the field, water and cold temperatures.  When one witnesses a Spinone for the first time the physical impression is that someone crossed a bloodhound with a Wirehair.

In the field, the Spinone is an excellent pointer with natural retrieving abilities. The Spinone is a happy breed, despite it's gruff bearded face and brows, and makes an excellent family companion. Unlike other pointing breeds that require large areas and lots of exercise, the Spinone does well in smaller yards with frequent walks.
