French Brittany

The French Brittany, or Epagneul Breton as it is known throughout Europe, is very different from the American version of the Brittany in several ways. The main differences are in hunting style, temperament and appearance.

The French Brittany is an upland bird dog with natural quartering abilities that enjoys hunting at a fast pace. In training this breed, it is important to start slowly and keep things very relaxed. A heavy-handed training program will not be effective with the French Brittany. In addition, the French Brittany is a very energetic breed that enjoys companionship and being with its owners at home and out in the field.

Unlike its American counterpart, which is commonly known as a very tall and lanky breed, the French Brittany is very compact. They are usually between 18 and 20 inches tall and usually weigh between 28 and 40 pounds. It's muzzle is shorter than the American Brittany, and they have dark noses and amber or brown eyes compared to the light nose and eyes on American Brittanys. French Brittanys can be black and white, liver and white, orange and white, tri-color and roan of any of those colors.
