Deutsch Drahthaar

The Deutsch Drahthaar traces its lineage back to the late 19th century and was developed by a group of German breeders who combined traits from existing coarse hair breeds, including the Stichelhaar, Pudelpointer, Griffon and cross-bred with the Deutsch Kurzhaar (or German Shorthair). Their goal was to create a hunting partner that would perform equally well hunting in field, forest and water...a truly versatile hunting dog.

The Deutsch Drahthaar is a pointer with natural game tracking and retrieving capabilities. They are well-known for endurance and their desire to obey. Like other hunting breeds, the Deutsch Drahthaar is an incredibly intelligent dog that requires training and guidance in order to make it content. Frequent exercise and time outdoors also are requirements for this breed. The Deutsch Drahthaar makes an excellent family companion as well.

The Deutsch Drahthaar is a medium-sized dog, with males measuring between 24 and 27 inches at the shoulder and females measuring between 22 and 25 inches. Their coat is usually very wiry and has a thick under wool that provides excellent warmth and protection in extreme environments, including water, cold and heat, as well as thorns, brush and insects. The most distinctive characteristics of the Deutsch Drahthaar are its wiry beard and bushy eyebrows, which give even the smallest Drahthaar puppies the appearance of a weathered old man. They come in a variety of colors, including brown and gray, black and gray, and more rarely, solid black or brown with or without white breast spots. The primary difference between the Deutsch Drahthaar and its American counterpart, the German Wirehair is in registration, most breed characteristics are the same though the Drahthaar tends to be more driven when it comes to furred-game.
