Western Wings: Hunting Upland Birds on the Northern Plains by Ben O.Williams

While trying to jump-start my fall hunting I picked up this Ben O. Williams book I had wanted to read for quite some time. This was the second book of Ben’s I’ve read this year and both followed similar styles. I think it is difficult to write a book like this, one that is not too instructional and one that is not just hunting stories. Western Wings is a good combination and really seems to work.

Personally I was hoping for a little more detail into some of the birds that I have limited experience with, possibly a secret strategy that would put more birds in the bag. However, the more I read, and the more I thought about my own experiences, the more the saying kept coming back to me, “that’s why they call it hunting.” If we were just about getting birds they would just call it shooting. This becomes particularly true with these Western species which require A LOT of walking in hopes sometimes of just getting within the same county as a group of birds.

The birds of the Northern Plains have definitely stolen my heart; to the point I have waterfowl hunted a grand total of two days in the last two years. For anyone looking to read more about these birds I would strongly recommend picking up a copy of this book. It is informative and entertaining, making it well worth the read.
