A High Lonesome Call by Robert Holthouser

"One man, two bird dogs, and the open road that is their answer." The book is a slightly fictionalized autobiography capturing the relationship of the author, a middle-aged carpenter, and his two Brittany gun dogs. The book follows them on their annual trek West across the county during hunting season.

I think deep down, the author is living out every hunter's dream...working during the off-season to squirrel away enough money to spend the fall chasing dogs and birds. The book is very well written and an enjoyable read. When I finished the book I was definitely hooked on Holthouser's style and left hoping this is only the first in a series of such books. I felt like this was a story that any hunter could relate to or has experienced, but delivered in a way that is not as common in today's cast and blast publications.
