The Sussex Spaniel dates back to the late 1800s and is named after the Sussex region of England. During his early days, the Sussex was used for certain types of rough shooting in England, where an abundance of game, together with the custom of hunting on foot, made the Sussex an adequate sporting breed. However, because conditions here require a much faster and heartier breed, the Sussex does not have the popularity as a hunting partner that some of the other spaniel breeds have here in the U.S.

What the Sussex lacks in speed, he makes up for in scenting ability. With an incredibly good nose and a great deal of determination, the Sussex makes himself valuable to the upland hunter.
