German Wirehair

GWP PuppiesLike the German Shorthaired Pointer/Deutsch Kurzhaar relationship, the German Wirehaired Pointer shares many similarities with its European counterpart, the Deutsch Drahthaar. The Wirehair is a very versatile gun dog that has natural game tracking and retrieving capabilities. They are well-known for endurance and their desire to obey. Like other hunting breeds, the German Wirehair is an incredibly intelligent dog that requires training and guidance in order to make it content. Frequent exercise and time outdoors also are requirements for this breed. The German Wirehair makes an excellent family companion as well. This is a truly versatile breed, able to chase downed ducks in a cold slough in the morning, point pheasants in the afternoon and tangle with a raccoon if the opportunity presents itself.

The German Wirehair is a medium-sized dog, with males measuring between 24 and 27 inchesGWP Point at the shoulder and females measuring between 22 and 25 inches. Their coat is usually very wiry and has a thick under wool that provides excellent warmth and protection in extreme environments, including water, cold and heat, as well as thorns, brush and insects. The most distinctive characteristics of the German Wirehair are its wiry beard and bushy eyebrows, which give even the smallest Wirehair puppies the appearance of a weathered old man. They are usually some combination of liver and white, including spotted and roan.

When people ask for my recommendation on a true, do-it-all dog, the Wirehair is at the top of that list.
